“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one…” (Ephesians 6:16, ESV)
Anytime the word “all” shows up in the Bible, it is important. If there’s something we need in literally every circumstance, that’s something we need to pay close attention to. In this case, we need the shield of faith in all circumstances.
The faith being talked about here is not referring to the faith it takes to begin a faith journey. At some point, you took a big leap of faith to start following Jesus and to become a Christian, and that’s amazing, but this verse isn’t really talking about that. It’s more like keeping the faith or remembering the faith. It means having faith in the things God’s word has promised. It means remembering who you are because of your faith. It means focusing on truth.
Roman soldiers used a shield that was about 2 feet by 4 feet in size to defend themselves. It was made out of wood and covered with leather. If the flaming darts connecting deep enough, they could destroy the soldier’s ability to defend by making it catch fire. The shield of faith is stronger than the soldier’s shield. Not only can in deflect and defend the attack, but it will extinguish the dart rendering it useless.
When the darts start flying toward you is the time to remember that keeping the faith is the key to enduring. Lies and accusations will come at you, but the truth is your shield. Doubt and fear will come at you, but faith is your shield. Difficult times and hardships will come at you, but hope and strength are your shield. God has given you everything you need to stand firm, and the shield of faith is something you always need.
